The Hulstrom Options School is excited to be a part of school choice for the Adams 12 Five Star School District. Hulstrom houses three very strong, dynamic programs designed to meet the needs of the learners they serve. Hulstrom is a wonderful, dynamic home to students in grades K-8.

The Young Scholars Program at Hulstrom is based on the assumption that many students learn best in a more traditional, structured environment in teacher-directed classrooms. These students achieve best when instruction is carefully selected and sequenced, satisfactory performance is demanded, and exemplary behavior is understood and enforced. Each classroom teacher teaches the basic skills identified for that grade level according to district curriculum. Promotion is determined by the performance of the student at grade level or above.

The Gifted Options program at Hulstrom is a full-time gifted and talented program for students in grades K-8. Students are identified through the Adams 12 School District gifted and talented identification criteria, which includes a combination of aptitude assessments, achievement assessments, teacher and parent input and product/performance review of the students. Students are taught by a classroom teacher with training and expertise in the needs of gifted and talented learners. Students operate at a more appropriate pace, depth and complexity level for their needs.

The Connections Program has blended the two approaches above into one program that reflects tenets of both. Higher order thinking, analytical thinking, and interdisciplinary thematic approaches are combined with structure and order to provide a balance that serves the needs of students. Students are taught by a classroom teacher with training and experience with differentiated instruction. The district curriculum standards are addressed at a more accelerated pace, deeper depth and higher complexity level, as is appropriate to their needs and abilities.

Our staff and parent community also believes that we must address the traits of successful, thoughtful, productive, healthy, creative, ethical, and good citizens, as well as raise test scores. Therefore, our goal is to address these traits along with continuing to provide a high quality academic forum for learning. At Hulstrom, we believe that it is our responsibility to encourage all students to reach their potential by engaging them in challenging, meaningful learning experiences.
