Mr. Hill's Social Studies 6 Class

Subject:
Social Studies

Welcome to Hulstrom 6th Grade Survey Study Of Latin America and Canada

It's great to be back for this year and moving in a direction of some version of normalcy after the last two years. But remember, you're still living through history, and history takes time! So extend some patience to yourself and others as we get back into the habit of what school used to be. This class is going to be fun (most of the time) if you put some of yourself into it and lean into the experience. For many of you it may be your first taste of a class devoted ENTIRELY to the wonder that is human history. Climb in, sit down, and strap in for a great year.

Some useful (maybe) information-

Off Hours and Availability: Periods 1 and 2 or by appointment

  • Email is the best way to efficiently contact me. I will do my best to reply to any and all messages within a couple school days.

  • For this course we will be using Google Classroom as our instructional learning platform. That means most assignments and information for the class will be posted there, and it is also where most assignments will be submitted. Our class code will be shared during the first week of class, so this may be the only time you visit this page.

  • Your assignments are expected to be turned in by their due date. This is extremely important as assignments and lessons build on each other day-to-day.

  • Extenuating circumstances will always be taken into consideration when completing work on time may be difficult. If this is the case, be responsible and communicate your needs with me. If I need to know something that will keep you from completing any assignment tell me beforehand, that way it’s a reason, not an excuse.

  • Your grade will be determined using the Adams 12 District Standards Based Grading Rubric. Each summative assessment, project or test will earn a score of 1-4, based on its level of proficiency. All scores received will contribute to a trend that shows a student’s level of proficiency in each of FIVE content standards (History, Geography, Economics, Civics and Connected Literacy Standards). Final grades will be based on summative assessments only. See available district rubric and grade reporting criteria pages on the class webpage. Your attendance and participation, as well as coming to class prepared will all contribute to your in class success. Keep in mind that your attendance and positive participation in class will help demonstrate what you understand. Also keep in mind you will earn the grade you receive.

The construction of this course is framed around Adams12 district standards and developing the students’ knowledge base of Canadian and Latin American cultures and their influences upon our increasingly interconnected world today. Students will examine the theater of history from indigenous tribal cultures through the contemporary development of both regions. We will highlight the pivotal eras in Latin American and Canadian development and evaluate their influence on today’s world.

I am more interested in students’ demonstration of comprehension through presentation and written explanation rather than multiple choice and fill in the blank options, this will be reflected in most class assignments and assessments.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
