Summary Statement: A study of fiction, focusing on how theme is revealed through characters’ responses to challenges and/or the point of view of the narrator or speaker in the text.

English Language Arts Grade 5 Unit 2: Ideas & Interactions

Summary Statement: A study of variety of nonfiction, including historical, technical and/or scientific texts, determining how two or more main ideas are supported by details, including interactions between individuals, events, or ideas. Students will write informative or explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

English Language Arts Grade 5 Unit 3: Vivid Verse

Summary Statement: A study of poetry, focusing on how stanzas fit together to provide structure and how visuals or multimedia contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text.  Students will write narrative poems which develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

English Language Arts Grade 5 Unit 4: Comparing Structures

Summary Statement: A study of how authors use reasons and evidence to support their points and comparing and contrasting the overall structure of two nonfiction texts. Students will recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources in order to write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

English Language Arts Grade 5 Unit 5: Integrating Information

Summary Statement: A study of multiple accounts of the same topic, analyzing similarities and differences in points of view;  drawing on and integrating information from multiple sources which is then applied to the inquiry process. Students will conduct short research projects, then integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write informative or explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

English Language Arts Grade 5 Unit 6: Power of Presentation

Summary Statement: A study of two stories in the same genre, comparing and contrasting settings, characters or events within a story as well as how each story approaches its theme or topic; analyze how visuals or multimedia contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of text. Students will use evidence from literary texts to support analysis in order to write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
