Hulstrom Student Earns 5th Place in National Spelling Bee!

Hulstrom Student Earns 5th Place in National Spelling Bee!

Aditi Muthukumar, an 8th grader at Hulstrom K-8, earned 5th place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. this year!  She won the Denver Post-sponsored state spelling be March to become one of 245 contestants at the national level.

Along her journey to becoming one of the top spelling finalists in the country, Aditi spelled "Torquemada," a word meaning "persecutor" and she was able to define "bellicosity," or acting showily aggressive.  To land her spot in the finals, Aditi spelled "myrmecoxene," which is an insect living in the nest of another insect that is fed and guarded for its secretion.

When she's not practicing spelling and defining words, Aditi spends her time writing stories, performing Indian classical dance, and playing the flute.  The entire community at Hulstrom K-8 was so proud of Aditi for her accomplishment!  Many staff members, friends, and families tuned in to watch and cheer Aditi on television, as the spelling bee was aired nationally!
